Volume Computation
Menu: Tools / Volume Computation
The Volume Computation tool allows users to quickly and accurately calculate volume changes between point cloud scans. Whether comparing two different scans or computing volume from a single scan, this tool provides efficient and precise volume analysis.
1. Scan Selection
Choose the mode of volume computation:
✔ From two scans – Compares two scans taken at different times to compute volume changes (e.g., terrain excavation, landfill monitoring).
🔹 Ensure that scans are selected in the correct chronological order to prevent inversion between “Added” and “Removed” values.
✔ From one scan – Computes volume directly from a single scan (e.g., measuring stockpiles).
🔹 Use the fence tool to isolate the area for volume calculation.
2. Volume Parameters
Define how the volume calculation is performed:
✔ Boundary computation algorithm
🔹 Concave hull – Follows the exterior of the scan closely to define the outline.
🔹 Convex hull – Connects the outermost points to create the outline.
✔ Geometric operator
🔹 Intersects – Considers only the overlapping area of both scans (used for “From one scan” mode).
🔹 Union – Includes all points from both scans (used for “From two scans” mode).
✔ Swell factor
🔹 Enter a swell factor if needed (e.g., useful for roadwork volume adjustments).
3. IDW Interpolation Parameters
Fine-tune volume computation precision:
✔ Grid cell size – Defines the resolution of the volume computation grid.
✔ k-nearest neighbors – Sets the number of neighboring points to consider.
✔ Power – Adjusts the weight of distance during interpolation.
4. Running the Computation
✔ Click “Compute volume” – Results will appear in the Results window.
✔ View the Heatmap – A colorized map will display volume variations.
✔ Generate a Report – Click “Open report” to save and analyze results.
