Analyze Surface

Menu: Analyze / Analyze surface

The Analyze Surface tool allows users to colorize points based on their distance to a selected surface. This visualization helps identify deviations and variations in the point cloud relative to a reference surface.

1. Using the "Color by Surface" Tool

This function is available in the Explorer → Objects Tab.

Steps to Colorize Points by Distance:

1️⃣ Right-click on a surface in the Objects tab.
2️⃣ Select "Colorize Points by Distance".
3️⃣ Choose an existing surface from the list.
4️⃣ Enter the Max Distance value (defines the range for colorization).
5️⃣ Click "Execute" to:

  • Identify all nearby points.

  • Calculate their distance to the surface.

  • Colorize the point cloud accordingly.

📌 Result:

  • A colorized point cloud appears in a secondary window.

  • The "Range of Colors" histogram is calculated, showing distance distribution.

2. Generating a PDF Report

A .PDF report can be created with:
Title & Subtitle (customizable via the “...” button).
Histogram of distance values.
Screenshot of the colorized point cloud.

Steps to Create a Report:

1️⃣ Click “Report” to generate the .PDF file.

📌 Best Practices for Accuracy:
Adjust the Max Distance to capture relevant deviations.
Use downsampling to speed up processing.

3. Downsampling for Faster Processing

A downsample option is available to reduce the number of points analyzed, improving processing efficiency.

  • The Downsample Value determines how many points are kept for calculations.

  • Larger values → Fewer points analyzed (faster but less precise).

  • Smaller values → More points included (slower but more detailed).
