The Sections Interface in VisionLidar allows users to generate cross-sections along an alignment for detailed surface analysis. These sections can be used to compare existing surfaces with proposed designs, analyze terrain changes, and calculate volumes between different layers.

1. Key Features of the Sections Interface

Automated Section Generation – Creates cross-sections at user-defined intervals along an alignment.
Customizable Offsets and Scales – Adjust horizontal and vertical scaling for better visualization.
Reference Surface Comparison – Compare original terrain with a design surface (e.g., road or embankment).
Volume Calculations Between Surfaces – Compute cut/fill volumes between multiple layers.
LandXML Export Support – Easily export cross-sections for external use in civil engineering software.

2. Key Section Parameters and Settings

Section Configuration

Option

Description

Section Name

Name of the section configuration (appears in the tree structure).

Surface

The base surface used to generate the cross-sections.

Scales

Horizontal and vertical scaling for section visualization.

Offset

Distance on each side of the alignment to include in the section.

Interval

Defines the distance between two consecutive sections along the alignment.

Reference Line

List of available alignments for section generation.

Start / End Chaining

Defines the starting and ending points of the sections along the alignment.

Reference Surface

Optional secondary surface for comparison (e.g., road surface vs. terrain).

Drawing and Viewing Sections

Option

Description

Preferences

Selects the section drawing style, as defined in preferences.

Draw

Displays sections in the main window.

Erase

Removes drawn sections from the main window.

View

Opens the section viewer for detailed inspection.

Report

Generates a volume report for cut/fill calculations.

Drawing Origin & LandXML Export

Option

Description

Drawing Origin

Specifies the first section’s origin in the drawing. Right-click to set by point number or coordinate.

Update Cross-Sections

Adds new sections along the alignment for LandXML export.

Volume Calculation Between Two Layers

Option

Description

Add Volume Calculation

Adds a volume computation between two surfaces.

Name

Assigns a name to the volume calculation (displayed in reports).

Origin

Selects the original layer for volume calculation.

Reference

Defines the reference surface for cut/fill comparison.

3. Best Practices for Cross-Section Management

Use reference surfaces to analyze design differences between existing and proposed projects.
Optimize offset values to ensure all relevant features (e.g., road shoulders, embankments) are included.
Set appropriate intervals for better accuracy while keeping computation time reasonable.
Enable volume calculations to track earthwork requirements and material quantities.
Export LandXML files for seamless integration with CAD and civil engineering software.
