Mobile Lidar

Menu: Civil / Start / Mobile Lidar

The Mobile LiDAR module enables analysis, line detection, and feature extraction from LiDAR data collected by terrestrial vehicles. Unlike aerial LiDAR, this function interprets LiDAR files as angles and distances, rather than using PCodes and classification. The primary focus is roadway data extraction, specifically for marking lines and alignments.

1. Key Features of the Mobile LiDAR Module

Reads LiDAR data from ground-based mobile systems.
Detects road marking lines by analyzing signal angle & intensity.
Transfers detected lines into alignments for further processing.
Supports automatic & manual adjustment of horizontal & vertical alignments.

2. Mobile LiDAR Interface – Options and Descriptions

Option

Description

Load LiDAR Data

Reads LiDAR files as angles and distances instead of PCodes or classification data.

Analyze LiDAR Signals

Processes the angle and intensity variations to detect road markings.

Extract Road Markings

Automatically detects lane markings, curbs, and boundaries based on intensity changes.

Transfer to Alignments

Converts extracted road markings into alignments for further refinement.

3. Road Marking Line Extraction

Detects lines based on LiDAR intensity changes (similar to virtual surveying’s intensity-based line extraction).
Optimized for roadway data collected from a vehicle-mounted LiDAR system.
Extracted lines are converted into alignments (usable in the Civil module).

🔹 Processing Steps:

  1. Load LiDAR data collected from a mobile scanning system.

  2. Run signal analysis to detect intensity variations.

  3. Extract marking lines using predefined angle and intensity thresholds.

  4. Transfer extracted features into the Alignment module.

  5. Manually refine horizontal & vertical alignments for accuracy.

4. Refining Alignments in the Civil Module

Extracted lines behave like standard alignments in VisionLidar’s Civil module.
Horizontal and vertical alignments can be adjusted manually.
Alignments can be used for:

  • Road reconstruction & planning

  • Infrastructure mapping

  • GIS & transportation analysis

5. Best Practices for Mobile LiDAR Processing

Ensure high-quality LiDAR scans with clear intensity variations.
Use appropriate signal thresholds to avoid detecting irrelevant features.
Refine extracted lines manually for high-precision alignments.
Export alignments to GIS & CAD software for roadway design and analysis.
